Ecosystem RestorationMarine and Coastal BiodiversityMTAKIMAU Community Forest Association hosted a powerful Conservation and Community Celebration in Takaungu, Kilifi County, ahead of its first Annual General Meeting, marking a major milestone in its revitalisation journey.
Supported by WWF-Kenya through the Bengo Project funded by Bundesministerium für wirtschaftliche Zusammenarbeit und Entwicklung (BMZ) , the CFA has strengthened governance and re-established itself as a grassroots leader in mangrove conservation and community empowerment.
Over 800 members and partners gathered, including Kilifi County Deputy Governor H.E. Flora Mbetsa Chibule, Kenya Forest Service, and WWF-Kenya representatives Abdinur Abdi and Nathaniel Mwangeka. Cultural performances promoted conservation awareness while celebrating local heritage.
Impact in action:
• 50 students from mangrove-adjacent communities received KSh 5,000 each through the newly launched Elimu Bursary Initiative, funded by proceeds from mangrove seedling sales used in restoration.
• Investment in water tanks and income-generating assets, including rental tents and chairs.
• 247 beehives handed over by Kilifi County Government to strengthen honey enterprises.
This is the model:
Stronger governance. Sustainable livelihoods. Thriving ecosystems.
